No Hot Water. The most obvious sign. On a tank unit, this usually points to a failed heating element (electric) or pilot light/thermocouple issue (gas). On a tankless unit, it could be a flow sensor, heating element, or venting problem.
Lukewarm or Inconsistent Hot Water. If you’re getting some hot water but not enough, the issue may be a failing heating element, sediment buildup on the bottom of the tank, or a thermostat set too low.
Rust-Colored Water. Rusty water from the hot tap is a sign that the inside of your tank is corroding. If the anode rod has been depleted, the tank itself begins to rust from the inside. This often signals a tank that’s nearing the end of its life.
Rumbling or Popping Sounds. Sediment accumulates at the bottom of water heater tanks over time. When the heating element heats through that sediment layer, it creates popping or rumbling sounds. Heavily scaled tanks often lose efficiency permanently.
Leaking Tank. A tank that’s leaking from the bottom is usually corroded through — and replacement is the right call. Leaks at the pressure relief valve or at connections are often repairable.

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters heat water only when you need it, which can reduce water heating energy use by 25–35% according to the U.S. Department of Energy. They deliver a continuous supply of hot water and last longer than tank units (20+ years vs. 8–12 years for tanks). The upfront cost is higher, but long-term savings add up.
