7 Causes of Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is a common frustration in almost every household — especially when multiple fixtures are being used at once. Your dishwasher, shower, and kitchen sink often pull from the same water supply and water heater, so some drop in pressure during peak use is normal. But when low pressure sticks around, it’s usually caused by one of a handful of common issues. Here’s what to check.

1. Water Leaks

Hidden leaks are never fun — they tend to show up as unexpectedly high water bills or water damage before you ever notice a pressure drop. Low pressure can also be a sign of a break in the municipal water main serving your street, which will affect pressure until it’s repaired. If you suspect a main line issue, it’s worth contacting your local water utility to check.

2. Peak Usage Periods

Your home shares a local water supply with your neighborhood, so some pressure dips during high-demand hours are normal, particularly in older or heavily used water systems. If your low pressure seems to come and go at predictable times of day, it may simply be a function of overall demand in your area rather than a problem with your own plumbing.

3. Mineral Buildup

Most faucets and showerheads use aerator screens to soften water flow and reduce usage. Over time, mineral deposits can clog these screens and noticeably reduce pressure at that fixture. If the issue is isolated to a single faucet or showerhead, try removing and cleaning the aerator screen first. If pressure is low throughout the whole house, it may be worth having your pipes inspected — corrosion or buildup inside older pipes can also restrict flow.

4. Geography and Elevation

The further your home is from a water treatment facility, water tower, or pumping station, the more your water pressure can be affected by distance. Elevation plays a role too — homes situated higher than the surrounding area tend to experience more pressure loss than homes at lower elevation.

5. A Partially Closed Main Shut-Off Valve

If your main shut-off valve wasn’t fully reopened after its last use, it could be quietly restricting your home’s entire water supply. Try closing the valve completely and then reopening it all the way to see if pressure improves.

6. Water Filters and Softeners

Filters and softeners can gradually reduce water pressure as they wear out or become clogged. In most cases, replacing the filter cartridge solves the problem. If pressure doesn’t improve, the unit itself may need to be replaced.

7. Low-Flow Fixtures

Water-conserving faucets and showerheads are great for efficiency, but they do limit flow by design. If a low-flow fixture is causing more frustration than savings, look into higher-efficiency low-flow models that offer better pressure, or consider swapping back to a standard fixture.

Low water pressure has a lot of possible causes, and not all of them are DIY-friendly to diagnose. If you’ve ruled out the easy fixes and pressure is still an issue, it may be time to have a plumber take a closer look.
